Puffins, Ponies, Picturesque & Past Shetland

You will be seeing a panorama of the town of Lerwick, Shetland’s capital and most northerly town of the British Isles. Developing from the 1600’s on the rise of the fishing industry where it eventually took over from the ancient capital Scalloway. Witness the town hall, sea front, Clickimin Broch (2,000 years old) and surrounding building of Lerwick.

Visit Scalloway the ancient capital and its ancient castle, which was built around 1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart, we will have a photo stop here where you get a full panorama of Scalloway and its Castle.

Enjoy the beauty the Shetland landscape has to offer as we travel to the South mainland, visit one of Europe’s most highly impressive archaeological sites (Jarlshof) and one of the most easily accessible seabird colonies in Britain, holding roughly 5000 of a bird colony. Sumburgh head is Shetland’s first lighthouse and a RSPB reserve of mostly seabirds breeding in the cliffs. Jarlshof covers many different people and periods making it quite unique. You will witness hundreds of puffins close up as well as other birds through most of the Spring and Summer. Looking down to the sea you see dolphins, mink and humpback whales, grey seals and porpoises. Passing through varying small settlements in the South of the Islands with a photo stop to observe Mousa – the best-preserved broch (ancient dwelling potentially defensive) in existence. We will pass through Fladdabister going South where old crofts and the beautiful wildflowers can be observed, our next stop takes us to the Village of Hoswick where we visit the Hoswick visitor centre. The Visitor Centre provides a welcoming venue for locals and visitors to the area. The Café provides delicious home bakes and light lunches all made to order as well as space to display items collected and preserved. The Centre includes weaving machinery, local items, and an interpretation of the Hoswick Whale case. Next to the visitor centre are two knitwear shops, one a very traditional knitwear company, Laurence Odie knitwear and the other nielanell, which combines artistic inspiration with inventive knit to create distinctive designs that are contemporary.
